Rhythm Trainer β€” read rhythms and tap them

A new rhythm appears on the staff. After the count-in, press the space bar (or tap the pad) on every note while the cursor moves. You get each note graded: on time, early or late.

Level

Each level adds new figures to the previous ones. Triplets and sextuplets do not apply to 6/8.

Frequently asked questions

How do I practice reading rhythm with this?

Choose a level, press Space to start and listen to the count-in. Then tap Space on every note (not on rests, and not on the second note of a tie) while the cursor moves. Turn on the counting to see 1 e & a under each note, and use Listen to hear the rhythm first.

How is my timing graded?

Each tap is matched with the closest note and graded by the precision you chose. On Medium, within 35 ms it is on time (green), within 75 ms it is close (yellow) and beyond that it is off (orange). Easy allows 60 / 110 ms and Hard only 25 / 50 ms. Notes you did not play are red, and so are taps where there is no note.

My taps are always late or early. Is it me?

Maybe not: Bluetooth headphones and some audio devices add delay. Use Calibrate under Options: tap with 12 clicks and the app measures and corrects the delay of your setup.

What tempo is the BPM?

In 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 the beat is the quarter note. In 6/8 the beat is the dotted quarter (two beats per bar), the way the music feels.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes: tap the big pad. For the most precise timing use headphones with a cable or the device speaker, and calibrate once.
